EPK 2012 FOUNTAIN

17.10.2019

Maribor held the title European Capital of Culture in 2012. As the year was coming to a close, a fountain was set up at the roundabout where Titova cesta road meets Ulica heroja Bračiča street. The fountain has 28 waterspouts and is dedicated to all the cities that had been chosen as the European Capital of Culture before Maribor.

Under the mentorship of Uroš Lobnik, PhD, the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Maribor held a public competition, in which the concept of the second year student Ines Štefanec was selected. She designed the fountain that abstractly represents the shape of the Maribor municipality. The fountain is made of concrete and the locally sourced tonalite from Pohorje, and consists of four monoliths representing the mountains and hills of Pohorje, Kozjak, Slovenske Gorice and Boč, whose layout indicate the position of Maribor. The water pool symbolizes Maribor as the green natural image of the city, displayed in three-dimensional shapes that carry the water curtains and light effects.
